What is an MCP server for code search?

An MCP server is a process that exposes tools to AI agents over the Model Context Protocol. A code-search MCP server indexes your repository and lets the agent ask for code by meaning, by symbol or by impact — instead of reading files one by one.

MCP in one paragraph

The Model Context Protocol is an open standard for connecting AI clients to tools and data. The client (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex…) lists the server's tools, the model decides when to call them, and the server returns structured results. One server works with every MCP client.

What a good code-search server exposes

  • Discovery — find unknown code by meaning (finder).
  • Targeted retrieval — exact ranges in a known file (file-finder).
  • Symbol lookups — definition, callers, callees, tests (context).
  • Blast radius — what a change affects (impact).
  • Status — is the index ready and fresh (index-status).

Before you install one

  • Consent. Does it index only folders you approve? Finder requires approval per exact path and refuses your home directory.
  • Bounded output. Results should be capped and cited, not raw file dumps.
  • Honest gaps. Partial or warming indexes should be reported, not silently returned as complete.
  • Read-only. Search tools shouldn't modify your code; Finder's rename tool only produces a dry-run plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is MCP only for Claude?
No. MCP is supported by Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, VS Code, Gemini CLI, Windsurf, Zed and many other clients.
Does an MCP server run locally?
It can run locally or remotely. Finder runs locally and keeps its index on your machine; embeddings are computed through the Finder gateway using your credits.
How many tools should a server expose?
As few as answer the questions well. Finder enables six by default and keeps power tools opt-in so the agent's tool list stays small.
